BIO
Rayna Carruthers is a documentary photographer and visual journalist based in Glasgow, Scotland. Her work has been influenced partly by a lifelong interest in migration, a passion rooted in her grandparents' experience of immigrating to the UK in the 1950s.
After finishing school in 2018, Rayna traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border, where she witnessed thousands of refugees and migrants arriving in Tijuana, halted from crossing into the United States. An interest in migration and the Arabic language later led her to Jordan in 2022, where she spent a year learning spoken Arabic. During her time there, she documented the experiences of refugees awaiting resettlement, further deepening her passion for photojournalism as a powerful medium for storytelling.
Currently, Rayna is studying Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh, where she continues to examine a variety of themes related to migration, gender, violence and identity. Rayna speaks English, Arabic and conversational Spanish.
